Behind the Scenes

AUTHOR'S NOTE: Moving from house to house can be challenging when you are a 12-year old foster child. Hollis Woods has been to so many different homes and been with so many new people she cannot remember them all. Hollis is finally introduced to a family style of living, and gets to know what having a family is like.

Every day children are getting adopted, moving into foster homes, and relocating to a new family. Hollis Woods, a twelve year-old girl and foster child was abandoned at the age of one day old. She has been to so many foster care homes she can’t remember them all. She finally finds a home she likes with the Regan family. After the Regan’s car accident, Hollis runs away because she felt the accident was her fault.

Hollis blames herself for the accident while nobody else blamed it on her. Hollis runs from the foster agency and Regan family until the police found her. She rejected the offer at first to be adopted by the Regan family because of the accident. Instead, she feels the need to find a way to be able to stay with Josie, the only other foster parent she liked being with although Josie’s health is deteriorating. Josie cannot care for Hollis. The Regan family is persistent about adopting Hollis. Hollis is a confused young child and isn’t alone because this sad truth is happening to real kids around the world every day going in and out of foster homes on a regular basis.

Hollis is just one of 408,425 children in the U. S. that are in foster care. Each one of these children needs a home and loving family. I think it would be really hard living as a foster child. Foster children don’t have a stable home environment or the continuous family love or support from parents. Foster kids are not living in the same home for an extended period of time. They struggle to fully understand what it means to be truly cared for, loved to the fullest and feel secure.

Without feeling secure when moving things could be challenging. For Hollis a new home, school, family and many other new things can be quite challenging. She can move right away and once again her life changes right away They don’t know when it’s coming or where you will end up. You have no time to prepare yourself. I can’t imagine living my life like Hollis has for so many years. To me, it all sounds very frightening. I can’t imagine what Hollis and many other foster kids have had to go through alone.

Unlike other foster kids and Hollis, I have a loving family and a great home. I cannot even dream of what it would be like to be independent and rely on yourself for everything like Hollis did. It would make the world a very lonely and a scary place. Relating to Hollis is hard for me because I have a supporting family with caring parents and loving siblings. I am surrounded by a lot of love and I know I have a place in my family and community.

Without love and support Hollis must feel lost and alone and always wonders where she will fit in. I don’t know what life would be like living as a foster child. I am glad I will never truly know. I feel extremely bad for children like Hollis, and I wish they did not have to experience life like this.

For the people that haven't experienced this and have more than others, they need to realize what they have and be thankful for it. At one point of the book and movie, Hollis was sleeping on a couch on the side of a busy road. She had nothing at the time which is why I think the theme of this story was a very good life-lesson because it makes you realize how lucky and appreciative you should be for what you have in your family and life.

Family, friends, home, community with many good experiences so far as the 12-year old I am with plenty more quality experiences to look forward to down the road. I hope Hollis makes the most of her opportunity to become a member of the Regan family to get to experience some of the things I am fortunate to have in my life.

Are you Proud of your country?

AUTHOR’S NOTE: Are you brave? Would you take the chance of life and risk it for your country? I don’t think I would be able to. Giving up your friends, family, job, school and more to go fight for your country. I am very proud of my country, the brave soldiers that fight for me and my freedom. I couldn’t ask for more.

Freedom comes only once in a lifetime if you don’t take you will never get it. Every day soldiers got out of their way to save another soul living in the US. Some people don’t realize that we are lucky that someone is out there fighting and risking their life for someone different every day. Imagine living away from your friends, family, and everything apart of you. Other countries don’t have freedom. Without our brave soldiers would we have freedom? Would we be able to do anything we want? Life would be different, but no one knows how different it would be. I am very proud of my freedom, the soldiers that fight for it, and the country they are fighting for. My country; my home; The USA.

I am very proud to live in the USA, because many countries around the world still have slaves and no freedom. They are still being beaten, barley eating, and is separated from their families. Many citizens still don’t have the right vote in their own country. The US used to have slavery but in 1833 Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery. Everyone had the same rights and the same reasons to live or die. There was no such thing as slavery. Along with Freedom the USA has many things like Education in their country.

Slavery is not the only thing America has different compared to other countries. We have good education. Students must go to school until the age of 18 and some other countries don’t even have education and if they do at all it is a very low and a little amount of students. Also we are lucky to have electricity food, water, and a home to live in. The nice warm showers we take while people can only shower once a week. And the water and food we waste. There are starving children and families around the world that just one little piece of food can last for days. People need to realize how lucky we are.

Having freedom, education, electricity, water, food, and a home is a big privilege I am very proud of my country. Every time you are ungrateful you are remember the other families and kids in other countries that don’t have anything close to what you have, and how proud you are of your country.

Wade leads World Championship Team

Author's Note: Are you a leader or a follower? Dwyane Wade is a leader on the basketball court. He is a team player and wants his team to get better. Dwyane lead his team to victory in the 2010 FIBA World Championship.

The Men’s USA Basketball Team has been in the FIBA World Championship since it first started in 1950 all the way until the latest Championship in 2010 in Turkey. They have never placed lower than 3rd in the Tournament. The 2010 USA Team, led by Dwyane Wade, was arguably one of the best teams to play in the World Championship games.

The 2010 Men’s basketball team went across the ocean to Turkey without a gold medal and came home with one after winning the 2010 FIBA World Championship Final, the USA beat host nation Turkey by 17 points. The USA team went 4-0 during the FIBA World Championship. Their first game was against Angola. They blew them out and won 121-66. Their second game was against Russia and won 89 to 79. In the third game, they played Lithuania and won 89-74. They were in the championship game against Turkey and won 81-64. Dwyane Wade was the leading scorer and the best player on the court. When they got home, people yelled and cheered for them to congratulate the USA players for their gold medal victory.

Dwyane Wade averaged 16 points per game. He was the best player on the court. No one could stop him. In the National Basketball Association, he plays for the Miami Heat. You might think that 6’4” is tall, but not in the NBA, because Dwyane is a point guard. He is a very big threat when he has the basketball. He can dribble, shoot, score, play defense and more. Dwyane may be the best player on the court, but it is all about team work.

Basketball creates teamwork and passion for the game. The USA team had a lot of teamwork winning the 2010 Championship. The United States plays together because they have won many FIBA World Championships. They won in 1950, when it first started. They also won in 1954, 1959, 1974, 1982, 1986, 1994, 1998, and 2006 before winning the latest FIBA World Championship in 2010.

Considering the number of great USA World Championship basketball teams, the 2010 USA World Championship team led by Dwyane Wade will be considered one of the greatest teams. When Wade and the 2010 team are compared to other USA championship teams, they should most definitely be considered as one of the best teams in history.
